Turkey has overseen the birth of major civilizations such as the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Because of its strategic location, where two continents meet, Turkey’s culture has a unique blend of Eastern and Western tradition, often described as a bridge between the two civilizations.

Anatolia, the Turkish mainland, has a long and colourful history. The world’s oldest city, dating from c.7500 BC, was discovered at Catal Hoyuk near Konya. Then came the Hittite Empire and in order Phrygians, Urartians, lydians, Alexander the Geat, Roman Times. With the coming of the Seljuks in the 11th century, Turkey began to take on a truly ‘Turkish’ identity.

The Ottoman Empire that arose in the early 14th century expanded to rule the entire eastern Mediterranean, much of Eastern Europe and North Africa for six centuries. After the Otoman Empire collapsed, victory over the Greeks confirmed Mustafa Kemal Ataturk as a national hero and a Turkish republic was born in Anatolia and eastern Thrace.
